HELP University’s Faculty of Law and Governance recently organised its annual Law Olympiad 2017 at Wisma HELP on August 5, 2017. Over 140 students from secondary schools across the Central region of Malaysia competed in the competition.

The all-girls team from Chung Hwa High School (Seremban) reigned as the champion of the event, defeating 27 teams of students in a series of challenges. Their victory was flanked by the first runner-up Tsun Jin High School and second runner-up Kuen Cheng High School. The winning team was presented with RM1500 worth in cash prizes, a challenge trophy as well as medals for each member. The second and third winners received RM750 and RM500 cash prizes along with individual medals respectively.

HELP University’s Law Olympiad has been held annually since 2000 and it continues to encourage analytical and critical thinking skills among students as well as develop an interest in the study of law or its related disciplines.

The Law Olympiad seeks to promote camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participants when they strategise and work together as a team to overcome the challenges of the game. There were four challenges in the Law Olympiad and students were not required to have knowledge of the law and were judged based on their logic, common sense and reasoning abilities.

After the competition, the visiting students were treated to a presentation of a mock trial conducted by faculty members and law students. During the mock trial, the faculty members played prominent roles and figures in a courtroom such as the prosecutor, defendant, witnesses and judge, while the law students assisted in supporting roles such as the court reporter and courtroom judge. The purpose of the mock trial was to help students better understand the local legal system through a professional demonstration of the proceedings within a courtroom.
