Australia remains a popular destination for Malaysian students to further their higher education. The cultural diversity, high quality education and proximity to home are the main factors which draw our local students to Australia.
According to the Australia Government’s Department of Education and Training, Malaysia is one of the top five nationalities that contributed to Australia’s enrolments in all education sectors, ranking fifth at 4.1% with 32,899 students in 2017. The Australia Trade and Investment Commission (AUSTRADE) attested to the figures and showed that Malaysian student enrolment marked an all-time high in 2017 with approximately 15% growth from 2016.
HELP University has been paving inroads in Australian universities for many years and has always been steadfast in maintaining its long tradition of producing outstanding students who are awarded prestigious scholarships. It is also the only university in the world to have a 2+1 articulation programme with the University of Queensland (UQ), a member of the Group of 8 Universities (Go8) in Australia, a coalition of world-leading research intensive Australian universities.
The tradition of academic excellence continued when seven undergraduate students from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (the Faculty) were awarded the UQ scholarship. The recipients will receive up to 100% waiver on their tuition fees and will be completing their final year undergraduate programme at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, UQ in July 2018.
The latest batch of scholarship recipients are Leong Fong Yin, Yong An Win, Ng Qi Yuan, Lee Sujin, Woon Jie Xiong, Ng Boon Ho and Cheong Jie Yao. Leong Fong Yin, an alumna of SMK Damansara Jaya, is no stranger to academic excellence, having scored 4A* for her A-levels. She was awarded the HELP Distinction and Merit Award to continue her Bachelor of Business (Accounting) programme at HELP.
“Studying at HELP allows me to grow in terms of sociability and adaptability. It allows me to have various opportunities to work with others and meet more local and international peers. My confidence has been boosted as I took up the various challenges at the university, in both academic and extra-curricular activities,” said Leong.
“I believe that transferring to Australia will provide me with a valuable experience. I am looking forward to exposing myself to a different environment and learn more about the world and people while focusing on my studies at UQ,” she added.
Another UQ scholarship recipient is Yong An Win, also an alumna of SMK Damansara Jaya who achieved straight As in SPM and 3As and 1B in the A-levels programme. She also received the HELP Distinction and Merit Award and numerous book prizes for her scholastic achievements at HELP. She has participated in the CIMB Stock Challenge in 2017 and was a committee member of the First Year Anniversary Party at HELP Subang 2.
“HELP has made me into a better person. I have become more sociable through the experience of participating in events and activities. I have also learnt to be more confident when it comes to facing challenges and solving problems,” said Yong, a second-year HELP Bachelor of Business (Finance) student.
“I am excited to be transferring overseas for my studies and I believe the scholarship will help me financially, allowing me to focus on my studies. I plan to graduate from UQ with First Class Honours and then seek for a job in the finance sector upon my graduation,” she added when asked about her future plans.
The Faculty has also recently celebrated other sterling academic performance. One of its business students, Ng Chun Ping was awarded the prestigious Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship – HELP University Elite worth approximately RM100, 000 for his final year of Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) at Macquarie University. Ng, an alumnus of Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur was awarded a 100% Tuition Waiver Scholarship under the Chong Hwa-HELP University Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Business (Finance) programme at HELP.
“My seniors encouraged me to study at HELP University and I was keen to study abroad in Australia through the credit transfer programmes that HELP University has established with partner universities in Australia. I was very excited when I received the news that I will be transferring to Macquarie University with a scholarship. The scholarship means a lot to me and it will help lighten my father’s financial burden,” he said.
Apart from providing its students with high quality education and opportunities, the Faculty also seeks to ensure that its students are trained in skills that will prepare them for the working world. To that effort, the Faculty has recently introduced a Certificate in Big Data and Data Analytics, a compulsory module for all their students. The module is designed to equip students with the use of tools and techniques of Business Analytics to build capability and manpower competencies for the Data Economy and Digital Free Trade Zone.
